Tencent's "One Line" Guo Xiaofeng reported on March 14th
In the afternoon, chip maker MediaTek released its first chip with built-in AI capabilities, the P60. With the help of AI technology, MediaTek hopes that P60 will maintain its position in the high-end smartphone market.
In 2016, MediaTek launched P-series chips to target the mid- to high-end market. After the launch of P10, the company received attention from the market and won recognition from many mobile phone manufacturers. With the improvement of the process thereafter, P23, P25, and P30 have been introduced. Compared with Qualcomm Xiaolong, the biggest advantage of MediaTek is that it aggregates the functions of current mainstream smartphones and helps handset manufacturers reduce production costs at a very cost-effective price. There is no doubt that the new P60 launch will promote the popularity of AI on smartphones.
In terms of product specifications, MediaTek Helio P60 processor adopts 8 core architectures of ARM's 4 Cortex A73 and 4 A53. Compared with the previous generation Helio P23 and P30 products, the performance of the CPU and GPU is improved by 70%. The adoption of TSMC's 12nm FinFET process has improved the P60's excellent power performance, reduced power consumption by 25% when executing large-scale games, and significantly extended the battery life of mobile phones.
MediaTek introduced NeuroPilot AI technology on the P60 processor. This is the biggest feature of the P60. It is an independent NPU unit, which is also the market's first midrange processor with AI capabilities. According to Li Zonglin, the general manager of MediaTek's wireless business communications division, the P60 has the performance of the current market-leading flagship smartphone, and will surely bring a more affordable experience to consumers this year, especially in the area of AI.
Although February’s revenue only reached NT$12.708 billion in MediaTek, it should be the low point of 2018 revenue. However, the arrival of the P60 was considered by the outside world as an important product to boost its annual performance. This can be seen from the changes in competitors. For example, Qualcomm released a series of midrange processors with the same built-in AI capabilities. Huawei Hass decided to transfer the AI features of the Kylin 970 processor to the mid-range Kylin 670 processor. Obviously, this is all to deal with the P60 competition. The final result depends on the ecological energy and market verification.
The P60 released this time brings together solutions from a number of AI vendors including Tencent, Shangtang, Hitachi, and Hongsoft. The P60 platform can quickly support the development of AI-related applications in the context of mobile phone security, photography, and face recognition.
It is understood that mobile phone products based on MediaTek's P60 chip will be available in April. OPPO, VIVO, and Xiaomi all intend to carry this chip. In addition to full screen access, smart phones with AI capabilities will be another hot spot this year.
