After implementing the Microsoft account and Windows 10 closely linked, killing the account password seems to be a hurdle in Microsoft's mind. As you can see from the Windows 10 Preview changes, the next update to the system will enable the Microsoft account no password login mechanism, which means that Windows 10, fingerprint and PIN logins that Windows 10 has implemented for many years will become mainstream.
In the Windows 10 preview version of the 18936 (20H1), which was just released, Microsoft began testing the passwordless login option. This means that the regular password login option is no longer visible on the login screen. Once the option is enabled by default, it means that the password used to log in to the account will not work.
In Microsoft's view, people use the account password to log in to Windows 10 in a very bad form, especially if everyone likes to use the same set of passwords and accounts on different websites and personal devices. Although the two-factor authentication scheme is implemented now, the cumbersome steps are difficult to convince. People use it.
In contrast, Window 10's PIN is more secure. Although there are only 4 digits, each device is independently set to be not shared online and can provide random variables. Even if a single device is stolen or cracked, the overall account is still secure. At the same time, Windows 10 can also store the secret key on the Trusted Platform Module TPM to enhance the security of PIN code storage.
In addition, Microsoft is also trying to convince Windows 10 users to initiate a dual authentication process, implementing a stand-alone Microsoft Authenticator mobile app, or even a FIDO2-compliant physical security key. After the Windows 10 update in May 2019, you can even log in to the PC through the phone number linked to the Microsoft account.
The password-free login plan will soon be extended to enterprise users through Azure Active Directory, especially for data-sensitive enterprise users, who often urge employees to update their accounts and passwords in two weeks, and rich password-free login methods. Will alleviate this problem.
In fact, Microsoft is not the first company to try passwordless design. Among the more hardware-connected Apple users, Apple Watch can be used to unlock the macOS that needs to be logged in by lighting the Apple Watch. At the same time, Apple Watch itself is linked with the iPhone. Once the iPhone is unlocked successfully, the re-applied Apple Watch does not need to enter a password, but automatically unlocks it.
At the same time, some Android phones can also be configured to access the trusted WiFi network, automatically skip the unlock page and log in directly.
It can be seen that it is not only Microsoft that wants to kill the account login password. It is very beneficial for enterprises and individual users to simplify login in a more reasonable and secure environment. After the official version of the Windows 10 update next year, the traditional account password is likely to appear only when you first enter the system, the era of no password has quietly approached us.
